Frequently Asked Questions

What do I get with a FREE subscription?

Free subscribers have access to all the Learner’s Guides, which contain sample cases, questions, references to the most relevant literature, and links to online resources.  Almost every reference is linked to its abstract or full text.  Although the Learner’s Guides do not contain the answers to the questions, it is possible to derive your own answers by reading through the references provided.

What do I get with a PAID subscription?

In addition to the Learner’s Guides, paid subscribers have access to the Teacher’s Guides.  Each Teacher’s Guide contains answers to the case-based questions, suggestions for teaching and discussion, and concise summaries of the original articles in the reference list.  Each summary reviews not only the methods and results of the article, but also the strengths and limitations.

How long can I keep my subscription?

A free subscription lasts indefinitely.  A paid subscription lasts one year.

Do you have a money-back guarantee?

If you are not completely satisfied with our product, contact us within 14 days of your purchase, and we will refund you 100% of your money, no questions asked.

How often do you update your teaching modules?

A literature search is performed for each topic once a year, and the module is updated as needed.  In addition, the contents of all the major internal medicine journals are reviewed on a weekly basis so that updates can be made in a timely manner when new evidence becomes available.

Who writes and edits the teaching modules?

Most of the teaching modules are written and edited by members of the faculty at Santa Clara Valley Medical Center, a public hospital with an internal medicine residency program.  SCVMC is closely affiliated with Stanford University, and most of the members of the Department of Medicine have academic appointments there.  Each module is piloted within the program before it is published on the web.

Why are some of the references linked to full text articles, and why are some linked to abstracts?

Professor EBM links to free content on the web.  Some journals, such as the New England Journal of Medicine, JAMA, Annals of Internal Medicine and Chest, offer free access to most full text original articles, usually after a delayed period of about 6 months.  Other journals offer only free abstracts, and you have to pay a fee to download the original article.

How can I request a module on a specific topic?

You can always suggest a topic by sending an email via Contact Us.  We would love to hear your feedback and suggestions.
